Our weekly matchup report focuses on FBS vs. FBS games and identifies historical information that may be useful when evaluating the current week's college football schedule.

For each qualifying matchup, Gridiron Gold may examine:

Recent Head-to-Head Meetings – Results from up to the last three meetings between the teams.
Series Record – Recent straight-up results between the opponents.
Current Series Streak – Which team has controlled the recent series.
Average Score – How the teams have scored in recent meetings.

This Week's CFB Matchup Trends

COLLEGE FOOTBALL — WEEK 3

Georgia at Arkansas

The recent totals profile is mixed but leans toward lower scoring in each team’s broader current form. Georgia has gone Under in four of its last five road games, while Arkansas has gone Under in four of its last five overall. Arkansas also shows an 8-2 Over trend in its last 10 as a home favorite, so that is an important conflicting indicator rather than a clean totals signal. Trend note: Current overall form points Under, but Arkansas's home-favorite history argues against treating it as a standalone angle.

Florida State at Alabama

Alabama enters with a strong situational ATS profile: the Crimson Tide are 7-0 ATS in their last seven September games and 3-0-1 ATS in their last four as a favorite. The totals history also stands out—Florida State is 7-1 to the Under in its last eight overall, while Alabama has gone Under in six of its last seven home games. Trend note: This is one of the week's clearer combinations of Alabama ATS strength and Under tendencies.

USC at Rutgers

These programs have only one prior meeting, in 2024, so there isn't enough head-to-head history to manufacture a meaningful series trend. Rutgers does bring a pronounced totals pattern at home: the Over is 7-0-1 in its last eight as a home underdog. USC is 4-1 ATS in its last five as a road underdog, although that situation may not match this week's market role. Trend note: Limited series history; Rutgers' home-under totals pattern is more meaningful than the head-to-head sample.

SMU at Louisville

SMU has covered six of its last seven overall and five of its last six as a favorite. Louisville counters with an 8-2 ATS record in its last 10 home games against teams with winning road records and 5-1 ATS in its last six as an underdog. Trend note: Strong ATS trends exist on both sides, making this more useful as a matchup warning than a one-sided historical signal.

BYU at Colorado State

BYU brings one of the strongest ATS profiles on the Week 3 board: 7-0 ATS in its last seven as a favorite and 9-0 ATS in its last nine nonconference games. The Under has hit in Colorado State's last four against Big 12 opponents and BYU's last four on FieldTurf. Trend note: BYU's favorite/nonconference ATS streak is the standout historical angle, accompanied by several Under indicators.

LSU at Ole Miss

This is one of the week's marquee SEC matchups. Current 2026 matchup analytics show LSU's offense grading favorably against the Ole Miss defense, while the broader Week 3 market has this among the major games receiving significant attention. Trend note: Treat the historical rivalry information as supporting evidence only; current personnel and 2026 matchup strength deserve heavier weight than distant series results.

College Football Head-to-Head Trends

Head-to-head history can reveal how two programs have matched up over time. Some series have been consistently close, while others have produced repeated high-scoring games, low-scoring games or extended winning streaks.

However, college football changes quickly. Coaching changes, transfer-portal movement, new quarterbacks, injuries and roster turnover can reduce the importance of older results. For that reason, Gridiron Gold treats historical college football head-to-head trends as supporting information rather than a prediction of what will happen in the next game.

College Football ATS Trends

ATS means Against the Spread. A team can win a game straight up but fail to cover the point spread, or lose the game while still covering as an underdog.

Our college football ATS trends focus on relevant historical point-spread performance when dependable line information is available. ATS history can add another layer to matchup research, but the current point spread always matters. A historical result against one number does not automatically apply to a substantially different line in the current game.

College Football Over/Under Trends

Historical totals can help identify whether previous meetings between two teams have tended to produce higher- or lower-scoring games.

Gridiron Gold reviews college football Over/Under trends together with actual scoring history. Current offensive and defensive personnel, quarterback play, pace, weather and the current betting total should also be considered before giving historical totals significant weight.

How Gridiron Gold Uses Matchup Trends

Gridiron Gold does not treat a historical trend as an automatic betting system. Trends are one piece of a larger handicapping process.

A 5-0 ATS streak can look impressive, for example, but those five games may involve different quarterbacks, coaches, coordinators and betting lines. The purpose of our weekly matchup research is to identify useful historical context and then evaluate it alongside current information.

That distinction is especially important in college football, where personnel and team strength can change dramatically from one season to the next.
