Free NFL Pick Tonight:
2025 Hall of Fame Game Preview: Chargers vs. Lions
Airing Tonight at 8:00 PM ET on NBC
Football returns tonight as the Los Angeles Chargers and Detroit Lions open the NFL preseason in the annual Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio. While most starters will rest, the spotlight is on emerging quarterbacks and rookie playmakers trying to earn their place on 53-man rosters.
Chargers: Lance to Lead Harbaugh’s Young Core
In his second season as Chargers head coach, Jim Harbaugh kicks off 2025 with a quarterback-focused approach. Third-year QB Trey Lance gets the start and is expected to play into the third quarter. After a year of development, this is a pivotal moment for Lance to solidify his standing in Los Angeles.
He’ll be followed by undrafted rookie DJ Uiagalelei, the former Clemson and Oregon State standout, who’ll likely take over in the fourth quarter.
Harbaugh also plans to showcase an exciting group of rookie skill players:
  • RB Omarion Hampton (powerful downhill runner)
  • WR Tre Harris (sharp route technician)
  • WR KeAndre Lambert-Smith (YAC specialist)
  • TE Oronde Gadsden II (big-bodied red zone target)
All four will see action and could ignite a more dynamic preseason offense than we've seen in past Hall of Fame games.
Lions: Hooker and TeSlaa Headline Evaluation Night
Detroit enters the game with quarterbacks Hendon Hooker and Brandon Allen set to split snaps, though no starter has been announced. The team is eager to see how Hooker — who sat out last year behind Jared Goff — handles live reps in an NFL setting.
The Lions’ most intriguing weapon might be rookie wide receiver Isaac TeSlaa, a 6'4", 214-pound third-rounder with 4.43 speed. Though his college production was modest, he’s turned heads in camp and could be featured as a downfield weapon tonight.
Key Matchups & Storylines
  • Trey Lance’s extended playing time vs. Detroit’s reserve defense
  • Chargers rookie weapons in live-game action for the first time
  • Hendon Hooker’s poise in his unofficial Lions debut
  • Isaac TeSlaa’s potential breakout as a red zone mismatch
Betting Preview: Spread & Total
  • Spread: Chargers + 1.5
  • Over/Under: 33.5
Over/Under Pick: Slight Lean to the Over (33.5)
While Hall of Fame Games historically trend under (8 of the last 10 have gone under). It's raining in Canton as of this writing, but we expect it to clear up by game time. This year's matchup features a few offensive factors that warrant attention:
  • Lance playing deep into the game means the Chargers offense may stay efficient through the 3rd quarter.
  • Harbaugh is starting multiple explosive rookies who could break open big plays.
  • Hendon Hooker adds mobility and upside against L.A.’s second-string defense.
  • If Detroit’s big-bodied WR TeSlaa connects on a deep shot, we could see a score or two swing expectations.
Final Score Prediction: Chargers 21, Lions 13
Total: 34 – just over the number
That lands right on the top edge of the total, so monitor line movement.
